- Paint Correction is the process resulting in the removal of defects from the vehicle's duco (paint). A paint correction or cut and polish as it is also referred to, can involve a few steps depending on the level of defects present and the required results. To safely go about a paint correction, the surface must be clean and free from contamination, or this could impede the process of removing defects in the paint and inflicting more damage to the paint.
- Let’s explore the reasons your vehicle requires a paint correction.
- • Flat looking paint – lacking gloss and slickness
- • Scratches – shallow or deeper. Some may require more than a paint correction to rectify however we can evaluate this in person with an inspection
- • Swirls marks across the paint. Usually inflicted from improper washing techniques
- • Harsh water spots that are unable to be removed via other methods
- • Buffer marks or holograms from improper polishing techniques
- Reasons our vehicles get paint defects varies from environmental, industrial and human interaction.
- Environmental:
- Sap, Pollen stains, Bee excrement, Bird and bat excrement
- Industrial:
- Paint overspray, Chemical overspray causing spotting and etching, Concrete dust, Tar
- Human Interaction:
- Hand bags, Fingernails, Rings, Washing techniques, Automated car washes, Dry wiping a vehicle at a car show
- Paint Systems
- I’m not an expert on paint systems, I have worked with paint and panel shops from my early years involved in this industry and this is a general breakdown of the three paint systems our vehicles have.
- Generally, there are 3 types of paint systems on our vehicles.
- 1. Single Stage
- 2. Two Stage
- 3. Three Stage
- Single stage paint systems consist of primer on the bare panel then a base (colour) layer over the top. That’s where a single stage paint system stops.
- Two stage paint systems consist of primer on the bare panel then a base (colour can also be a metallic) layer over the primer. This is then layered with clear coat. A clear coat contains UV stabilizers which assist with paint fade from sun damage.
- Three stage paint system consist of primer on the bare panel then a base (colour) layer over the primer. This is then layered with a pearl layer followed by a clear coat as per the two-stage paint system. Some (not all pearl paints) were and can be done as a two-stage paint system. I have a vehicle with a two-stage pearl paint system.
- Paint Touch Ups
- We offer paint touch up services with our paint correction packages. We take the factory paint code from the vehicle, and a local paint supplier mixes a pot of paint to be applied to stone chips or slightly deeper scuffs and scratches. We can then sand the touch up paint level the body paint and polish it to a finish where the touch up won’t be visible.
- We offer a range of paint correction processes depending on what you want to achieve.
- Single stage which will remove up to 80% of swirls and light defects across your vehicle's paint from $660 inc. GST.
- Multi stage which will remove up to 100% of swirls and defects across your vehicle's paint from $770 inc. GST.
Above we’ve touched on a range of defects that may have you considering a paint correction for your vehicle. The below image shows the most common defects however there are more.
• Oxidization (also known as paint fade)• Clear coat failure • Bird and Bat dropping etching • Swirl marks - the most common paint defect noticeable by the naked eye
